Shade House

Defined by restraint, shaped through materiality.

A residence designed to balance presence and control - guided by how it would present over time.

Location: Essendon

Typology: Private residence

Status: Completed 2024

Located immediately next door to our Light House, the project required a measured response.

The approach began with how natural light could be used to reinforce the spatial structure.

Linear geometry and controlled proportions establish a clear and consistent form, rather than relying on stylistic gestures.

Materials are used with discipline — selected to work cohesively and remain relevant over time, not just at completion.

Internally, openings are positioned to draw natural light deep into the plan, allowing spaces to change subtly throughout the day.

This creates an environment that feels calm and composed — where light enhances the experience of the space, rather than defining it entirely.

The layout is structured to simplify movement through the home. Spaces are connected, but not exposed.

This balance allows the residence to adapt — supporting both daily routines and moments of retreat.

The result is a residence that feels resolved and coherent.

Nothing unnecessary has been introduced.

Each decision supports how the home is lived in — not just how it appears.
